TRANSLATED FROM THE ASSAMESE BY NAVAMALATI NEOG CHAKRAVORTY
The World’s Beautiful Because of Tears
The way the crimson sun on the west
Spread its message in the east,
With its rosy reddish rays;
The coppery-red sun hail the morn,
On hearing the welcome of heavenly breeze.
When the pollen grains of my life shall take wings
Towards infinity, leaving the loving earth behind,
May I then still hear the music of the earth;
The earth’s last momentary invocation;
That shall be my soul’s life-giving potion;
With that on my lips I shall sing again
Forgetting the heavens, in a pleasant cry.
The world’s beautiful because of tears;
A poet never craves for paradise.
