Applications are now open for Antonym Collection’s upcoming novel fiction translation retreat to be held between 15th-20th January at Purnendu Smriti Shilpogram, Uluberiya.
This retreat will focus on translation novels of two of the most renowned contemporary writers Swapnomoy Chakraborty and Bhagirath Mishra. During the span of the retreat the translators will have the chance to meet and discuss the projects with the writers.

An award winning translator, writer and activist, V.Ramaswamy’s translations of Subimal Misra’s stories have found publication in two collections: “The Golden Gandhi Statue from America” (2010) and “Wild Animals Prohibited: Stories, Anti-Stories” (2015), both published by HarperCollins India. Currently, a third volume, featuring two anti-novellas, is in the process of publication. He is engaged in translating the works of another contemporary Bengali author, Manoranjan Byapari. His Translation of his novel “Nemesis” (translated title) was shortlisted for the JCB award 2023.
Writers in Focus:
Swapnamoy Chakraborty was born in Kolkata. He started his writing career with short stories. His first short story was published in 1972, and Chakraborty’s first book Bhumi Sutra was published in 1982. His book Abantinagar won the Bankim Puraskar in 2005. His work is both critically acclaimed and well-received by readers. Holud Golap is a seminal, monumental work about the LGBT community and its relationship with the larger society and received Ananda Puroshkar.
Bhagirath Mishra has a postgraduate degree in Geography from Kolkata and has more than a hundred published short stories to his credit. His short stories have won him the Certificate of Honor (1993), presented by Madhuparni, a distinguished magazine. Earlier, he had won the Sopan Puraskar in 1990 and the Galpaeala Puraskar in 1992 for his short fiction.

Submit a translation of the first 2000-2500 words/1st chapter of any one of the Novels offered for the retreat (email your submission to [email protected]).
Along with the sample translation, share a cover letter stating your interest and reason for translating the work(email).
A brief bio of yourself (Attach in the form/ email).
4 candidates will be accepted for the retreat.
Shortlisted Participants will have to bear their cost of stay at the retreat. (12000INR)
All candidates are required to take care of their travel/ Visa/ transportation to and from the venue.

Contract Policies
Depending on the progress made during the retreat, the participating translators will be signing contracts to work on the respective novels which will be later published by Antonym Collection.
